The Rocketman (Der Raketenmann) - A German Superhero
The artists Norbert Bauer
(Bremen/Germany) and Ralf Tekaat (Brooklyn/NY and
Hannover/Germany) recognized that in Germany there is no
common superhero like Superman, Spiderman and so on. So they
wanted to fill this gap and invented the Rocketman.
It is a multimedia Installation including many photos,
drawings, copies, self-written texts and video about the
fictive search for this superhero, when and where he was
create by accident, which was his greatest feats or how could
he fly and does the Rocketman needs a atmospheric pressure
armor.
The work is playing with the several forms of scientific,
journalistic and artificial output, e.g. there is a
eye-witness video, some archaeologic drawings of his burned
launching site or quotes of German politicians. All in all
only a few historic details were manipulated.
In some kind it is a time travel through the past sixty years
of German history, started after the World War II including a
lot of so called miracles ("The Miracle of Bern": How Germany
won for the first time the Soccer World Championship in 1954,
the real rebirth of the FRG or the "Miracle of Lengede" where
several slopped mine workers were rescued after more than one
week). Or he is close by when the German chancellor Helmut
Schimdt and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of
the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev shacking hands in 1977. His
activities end with the breakdown of the Berlin Wall in 1990.
After that the Rocketman retires and probably lives in New
York because here he knows some other superheros and he is not
that lonley as he was in Germany (where he is the only one of
his kind) anymore. Bauer/Tekaat entertain suspicion that he
have opened a comic book store in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn which
is called "The Rocketship".
For the outdoor space it was planed to rebuild a typical
launching site of the Rocketman.

Diese Installation ist eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit der
Künstler Norbert Bauer und Ralf Tekaat. DER RAKETENMANN
ist die fiktionale Recherche über einen deutschen
Superhelden.
Was ist der Raketenmann? Ist er ein Mensch, eine Maschine,
oder ein bio-mechanischer Unfall?
Norbert Bauer und Ralf Tekaat haben sich auf die Suche nach
dem deutschen Superhelden gemacht.
Mit der Figur des Raketenmanns haben die Künstler
versucht klassische Muster der Superheldenerzählungen in
die deutsche Nachkriegsgeschichte zu installieren. Dabei
werden verschiedene Formen der wissenschaftlichen,
journalistischen und künstlerischen Wissensproduktion und
–vermittlung zitiert. Dabei steht die Allgemeingültigkeit
von Geschichtsschreibung als Aneinanderreihung von medial
verwertbaren Ereignissen und die Tendenz, genau das zum
gesamtgesellschaftlichen Identifikationsrahmen zu stilisieren,
im Mittelpunkt.
Anhand von Skizzen, Fotos, Film und einer Broschüre wird
das Wirken und Erscheinen des Raketenmanns dokumentiert.
Phantomähnlich erscheint er auf verschiedenen Fotos und
steht als Leibwächter dabei, wenn sich
Nachkriegspolitiker wie Leonid Breschnjew und Helmut Schmidt
die Hand geben, oder taucht beim Spiel der deutschen
Fußballnationalmannschaft in Bern kurz im gegnerischen
Tor auf.
